Marriage Licenses

There are two types of marriage licenses commonly issued in California: the Public Marriage License and Confidential Marriage License. Both are valid for 90 days. In addition to the general requirements, there are additional requirements for each of the licenses. A detailed description of the license requirements can be found under the "obtaining a marriage license" tab below.

Wedding ceremonies must be performed by authorized individuals per California Family Code Section 400 or by a Deputy Commissioner of Civil Marriages. See the tab "persons authorized to perform your marriage" below.

Marriage Licenses must be returned within 10 days after the marriage to the county where the license was issued for registration of the License. A Marriage Certificate can be purchased after the Marriage License has been registered.

A Marriage Certificate is the certified copy that can be purchased after the Marriage License is registered and can be used as proof of marriage for legal purposes, SSN, DMV, Insurance, etc.  See our Birth, Death, Marriage Certificates page.
